Woo Hoo!

Yesterday and today have been good days. I'm very excited about the results of the election. A few weeks ago we were at Sunday dinner at Lou's parents house. As the election was/is a hot topic of course it came up.  Jeff (Lou's Dad) was telling me why he wanted McCain to be President, he was telling me of the danger of too many social programs.   I told him I was planning on voting for Obama.  He asked why, at the time I couldn't put it into words besides that I got a better feeling from him then I did McCain. I am very driven by emotions and feelings and make a lot of my decisions based on how I feel.  I have been more active this year about following politics, I have looked up and read many of McCain and Obama's policies and I felt better when I read Obamas. I didn't like the negativism I felt from McCain especially during the Presidential debates. Jeff told me that I had to ignore looks, race  etc and decide what my core value is and see what candidate best represents what I feel is important.

I have thought a lot about that since Jeff challenged me.  to Jeff agency is the most important principle. I can respect that.  I do feel however that Republicans spend as much as democrats (look at what Bush did to the budget in the last 8 years compared to what happened while Clinton was President) and make decisions about spending our money that we don't have choices about.

I however have decided that for me that King Benjamin in the Book of Mormon best describes on what I feel is most important. How when we are in the service of our fellow beings we are only in the service of our God.  Later on King Benjamin tells us

16 And also, ye yourselves will asuccor those that stand in need of your succor; ye will administer of your substance unto him that standeth in need; and ye will not suffer that thebbeggar putteth up his petition to you in vain, and turn him out to perish.

17 Perhaps thou shalt asay: The man has brought upon himself his misery; therefore I will stay my hand, and will not give unto him of my food, nor impart unto him of my substance that he may not suffer, for his punishments are just—

18 But I say unto you, O man, whosoever doeth this the same hath great cause to repent; and except he repenteth of that which he hath done he perisheth forever, and hath no interest in the kingdom of God.

19 For behold, are we not all abeggars? Do we not all depend upon the same Being, even God, for all the substance which we have, for both food and raiment, and for gold, and for silver, and for all the riches which we have of every kind?

I believe this with all my heart. I know many people abuse the programs that the government sets up to help the needy but there are people that need help.  We can not get rid of programs that so many people need to survive. What kind of country would we be if we did.  I felt while listening and studying the candidates that Obama cared more about the American people. I loved hearing about the good work that he did in the South side of Chicago (of course the south side of Chicago is where I served my mission) I love that after he graduated from Harvard Law school he chose to go back to Chicago to serve the people instead of chosing a lucrative job with a high profile Law firm..  To me Obama brings hope to a country in despair. He brings energy to a White House that has long lost any desire to get things done for the people of our good country.  Obama is a visionary man that will change our country for the better. I have listened to his acceptance speech several times and I feel moved more than i have by any politician.

That is why I say woo hoo to the results of an historic election night.

Smaller woo hoos.  We got our first snow today, it didnt' stick but the kids are excited.

I got my spot for BYU basketball season (starts Thursday) I am the President Guests Host. I sit (not stand) where the President guests sit during the game makingsure they're comfortable and making sure no one sneaks into this section.  So yeah I sit practically  courtside and watch the game for work.

so woo hoos all around!

Diana,
Loved your reference from King Benjamin; listening to Christian Radio the other day, the preacher said he disagreed with Obama, who would "take" from him (the preacher) to give to others, while the preacher said if he wanted to give, he would - "charity" - at his option, and as the recipient may deserve. And on Election Day, a pickup truck with flags flying and "McCain/Palin" signs, had two other signs: 1-I cling to my Religion and Guns, and 2 - Yes, I'm selfish - NO SOCIALISM!
I'm reminded of the United Order communities in the early church history, and the failure of the program, (what would be called 'socialism' today) because of selfishness on the part of the members participating. Along with you, we feel inspired and hopeful by the promise of President Obama. Good Choice!
Love Dad

Well said Diana, seriously - those are much the same feelings that I have.

Also, side note - I love the cute turkey theme!

This is great, Diana. I think it's very important to really think about your political views, and I love the way you included scripture to back up your viewpoint.
