About a Boy
Friday night is date night for me and Louis. We always do things at home because well our kids have an early bed time and most of our friends have kids of their own so we don't really like asking for sitters. Anyways for our date on Friday we watched About a Boy and played Phase 10. About a Boy is one of our all time favorite movies. We first watched it with Annie and Steve over 3 years ago. While I was watching this time, I thought a lot about my kids. I felt very sad that Marcus (the main kid in the movie) had to have such a messed up mom. Marcus's mom suffers from depression, she is a hippie vegetarian who feels like her son needs to believe exactly like she does. Marcus is a very weird messed-up kid because of his mother. The mom doesn't realize the damage that she is doing to her son. While we were watching I thought wow I really don't want to impede my children's growth. I hope that I can keep on growing as a person and be secure enough about myself so that my kids, although they will go through problems, because all kids do; I won't be a problem that they have to overcome. I would hate for them to go through childhood and adolescence always being embarrassed by me or Lou. I want my kids to be their own individuals. I hope they we can be good examples to them, teach them the gospel and them let them chose to live it.

Re: 'About The Boy' and your thoughts on parenting: my experience has been a parent must be themselves - foibles and all, and from within that reality, exercise the responsibility obvious to 'doing the right thing' which varies greatly from person to person and within cultures - religious, socio-economic, philosophical, etc. and kids will STILL grow up to be what THEY are - different, perhaps, than the parent, in some, many, or ALL ways, And the parent needs to be able to say: "I did my best"
